What’s Going On? (Mar 11th – 17th)

A whole new week means a whole new set of MMA news and events that needs to be discussed by yours truly. So let’s get right into it with some interesting topics for this week.

Demetrious Johnson vs. TJ Dillashaw?

The superfight between the UFC’s two smallest male champions has been anticipated for months but still ha not been finalized. This largely in part has to do with Demetrious Johnson being unwilling to fight TJ Dillashaw without the proper pay. Now Johnson is stating that he has no interest in the UFC Bantamweight Championship.

I’m going to be frank and honest, if I went up there and beat T.J. Dillashaw at 135 pounds, I have no interest whatsoever in staying at 135. People are like ‘why not?’ and I’m like I have no interest in fighting guys who walk around at 160 pounds.” – Demetrious Johnson

This is reasonable thinking for the flyweight champion as he would have to deal with a lot of guys who would be considerably bigger than him. His ability to not let the pressure get to him is also admirable. Meanwhile, former middleweight champion Michael Bisping stated that Johnson needs this fight to cement his legacy. Legacy is great and all but nowadays it is all about the green stuff. Bisping should know better than that.

Amanda Nunes vs. Cris Cyborg?

While we are on the topic of superfights, Amanda Nunes vs. Cris Cyborg has been a women’s fight that many MMA fans are hopeful to see. However, Nunes appears to be backtracking her desire to face off against the dominant featherweight champion. She put emphasis on the fact that her division is starting to grow and that more contenders are lining up to face her. Nunes feels she is obligated to fight the top contenders instead of fight another champion in another division. Some feel that Nunes does not want to fight Cyborg and that she is using this as an excuse to avoid her. Whatever the case, I like the stance. Champions should be obligated to fight their top contenders. Maybe after a few solid defences then they can look for super fights.

UFC 225 News

UFC 225 is starting to shape up as Chicago has no got three big names added to the show. The main event will be Robert Whittaker defending his middleweight title in a rematch of his last fight against Yoel Romero. But if that isn’t enough then the Chicago crowd will be happy to learn that one of their own, CM Punk, will be making his return to the octagon. His opponent is still unknown. I love the main event, it will be just as exciting as their last bout, but the addition of CM Punk is surely to make the real MMA fans groan. His UFC debut was a disaster and now he is getting a second chance. Hopefully this will be his last bout because, whether he wins or loses, there is pretty much nobody left that CM Punk can even come close to hanging with.

Ronda Rousey Retired?

In a recent interview, Ronda Rousey stated that a return to the octagon is as likely as a return to the Judo Olympic scene. This is very disappointing for any fan that wanted to see Rousey strap on those gloves again, even if it was one more time. I feel this is the best call for her as she is having tremendous success with her WWE run and seems to be really happy there. Back in the UFC, she may take another beating and will also be boo’d by a bunch of anti-Rousey fans. I still think she can beat a lot of women in the UFC, but her days as champion are done.

Luke Rockhold vs. Michael Bisping III?

Trash talk has been going back and forth between Luke Rockhold and Michael Bisping on Twitter (I would post it here but there are too many to post). The fight should happen as it is the norm for a trilogy fight to happen if both fighter have one win a piece. However, Bisping doesn’t know if he fights again. He believes he may have fought for the last time but Rockhold is hoping for a final shot to redeem his embarrassing loss to The Count. Let’s all just hope and pray this fight gets made because there is bound to be a finish and this rivalry is as real as it gets.

Bisping doesn’t know if he fights again

Darren Till vs. Rafael Dos Anjos?

Darren Till has expressed interest in fighting former lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos in a recent interview.

Just because of his fan base there, and I’ve obviously lived there. I’ve got a lot of fans there, and I can speak the language. It would be a good sell in Brazil, if he’s willing to do it… I know he’s waiting for [Tyron] Woodley but Woodley doesn’t seem to want to come back.” – Darren Till

As fun as a fight this would be, Dos Anjos has earned the right to fight for the title and should not have to fight the #7 ranked fighter in his division. This would be a repeat of the Jacare Souza situation. Maybe Till can fight Colby Covington in the mean time (I know a lot of people want to see that guy get knocked out badly).

Mackenzie Dern‘s Debut Draws Viewers

According to Dave Meltzer, Mackenzie Dern’s UFC debut was the most watched portion of the UFC 222: Cyborg vs. Kuntskaya prelims. It was also a bigger draw than the crazy Wilder vs. Ortiz boxing fight. Although Mackenzie Dern herself wasn’t that impressive in her debut (completely lacking in the striking department), she has proven to be a pretty big cash cow for the UFC. I expect them to give her the Sage Northcutt treatment to make he a household name and protect her record. I just hope see fixes her striking or uses her grappling much more effectively, otherwise see will end up like Ronda Rousey when she was exposed in the striking department.

Conor McGregor, Max Holloway, and Burger King

Conor McGregor and Max Holloway continued to poke jabs at each other after UFC 222: Cyborg vs. Kunitskaya.

So when McGregor announced that he was partnering with Burger King, similar to Anderson Silva, the UFC Featheweight Champion decided to take this opportunity to mock his former advisory.

Don’t you just love when two fighters get along? In all seriousness, I don’t understand why McGregor is even talking trash to Holloway. I guess he may want to face him when either of those killers, Khabib Nurmagomedov or Tony Ferguson, take his belt. Regardless, in about a month only one of them can call themselves champion.

Derrick Lewis vs. Francis Ngannou?

Derrick Lewis has been campaigning for a fight with recent title challenger Francis Ngannou. He said recently on a podcast that he would like to get the fight as soon as possible. This would definitely be an entertaining fight and would be easy for the UFC to sell as a must-watch bout. Ngannou may not want to fight Lewis now, especially after coming short against heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, but this could be the fight that would propel him back into title contention. Plus, the rivalry between these two has been bitter from the start. Let’s just hope that when they do fight, the UFC reinforces the octagon cage walls.

Fabricio Werdum wants to be in WWE

This is probably the most surprising news of the week. Fabricio Werdum has stated that he will meet with WWE executives to talk about a potential crossover into the world of professional wrestling. Werdum then went on the record to say that the idea was nixed and instead he would be considering lucha libre style wrestling. This is a very off move as Werdum feels that he can balance both worlds which has me skeptical. If he ever does go to WWE, however, then I would love to see him and Brock Lesnar in a cage match. The cage should also be in the shape of an octagon.

What’s Going On? (May 7th – 13th, 2017)

A whole new week means a whole new set of MMA news and events that needs to be discussed by yours truly. So let’s get right into it with some interesting topics for this week:

Conor McGregor’s baby is born

The world finally got another Conor McGregor (as if one wan’t enough). The media is already making articles of him as you read this article that I wrote about him. It’s unknown how long McGregor is going to spend raising his child until he come back to the UFC, but at least we finally see something happen and maybe we will see him defend a belt after all…or maybe not.

Anderson Silva and Dana White have war of words

1494290020848.png

UFC president, Dana White, and one of the greatest of all time, Anderson Silva, have now been going back and forth in regards to UFC 212 in Brazil. Anderson Silva has requested to fight Yoel Romero for the interim UFC Middleweight Championship at UFC 212 in his home country of Brazil while the current UFC Middleweight Champion, Michael Bisping, waits to defend his belt from Georges St-Pierre sometime after October. It made sense to me for Silva to get a interim title shot especially from a company that gave Dan Henderson a legit title shot after only one win when he wasn’t even in the top 10. But White had other ideas when he said he believd Silva should just retire. I think this is heavily disrespectful to a legend who has helped build the very company that White helps manage. But White does not care about any of his employees and only cares about the money they make him. He will give McGregor and immediate rematch after being submitted in the second round but will not give arguably the GOAT of MMA an interim title shot when the current champion is going to wait a full year in between title defenses? This saddens me especially since a lot of younger MMA fans agree with him. I feel we need a better send off for The Spider, but I guess I’m the only one that thinks so.

Kelvin Gastelum punished for failing marijuan test

1494290448926.png

Some lighter news (smoking joke), Kelvin Gastelum recently tested positive for marijuana, which is banned in most MMA and athletic associations, and has thus been given a 90 day suspension from MMA and had his win against Vitor Belfort turned over to a no contest instead. This comes as no surprise and yet many people are up in arms against the decision to turnover the win to a no contest. I think, as much as I do not believe marijuana should be illegal in MMA, that this was Gastelum’s own fault. As a professional fighter you need to know what is legal to take and what is not so that you don’t get yourself in trouble. He should know that marijuana is illegal but decided to take it anyways. That to me is unprofesional. Now I know a lot of you are thinking to yourself that it is a dumb rule that should not even have a punishment to beging with and to that I agree with you. But if you do not like a rule then you need to find a better way to combat it then just not following it. There are many laws in the U.S. that people do not like and we don’t just go breaking them because we do not like them. That could lead to a fine or jail time. Instead there is a process to get the law changed or removed entirely. Gastelum should have chosen this but instead did the unprofessional thing of blazing it. I also blame his camp for letting him do that as well. Keep control of your fighter and this won’t happen.

Daniel Cormier explains the reason for so many Jon Jones supporters

1494290991484.png

Daniel Cormier had a few choice words for his haters and the flock of sheep that follow Jon Jones when he was on the Edge and Christian Podcast of Awesomeness:

People don’t want to be told, ‘I’m good so you should cheer for me.’ Jon Jones is a guy that has made a lot of mistakes, so maybe people relate to him more. They go, ‘Forget this Daniel Cormier goody two-shoes, him and his kids and his family. I want the guy that does coke and parties and crashes cars. That’s the guy I want.’” – Daniel Cormier

He even related himself to that of John Cena and Roman Reigns who are good guys in the WWE but are booed because of being too good. Honestly it makes a lot of sense since Jon Jones is the bad boy and Daniel Cormier is his opposite. But I think it more has to do with Jon Jones just being the better athlete. People like to cheer for winners, and when Jon Jones got into trouble his fans turned on him. But when he announced his return, his fans ran back to the winning side that he was a part of. Unless Cormier beats Jones in a rematch, things will stay like this. But hey I’m a fan of you, Cormier, so there’s something you have going for you.

Some more Al Iaquinta news

ZF8EA81494291965

Al Iaquinta said to the UFC to “cut me you sissies” on twitter. If you expect me to talk any more about this then you’re out of luck. I really do not know what to say about him anymore. So here is the jist of what I’ve been thinking: Iaquinta is crazy, the UFC is crazier. They are a bitter angry ol couple that can’t stand eachother but can’t leave one another. That’s all for this episode of “What is Al Iaquinta Doing Now?

What’s Going On? (April 21st – 27th, 2017)

A whole new week means a whole new set of MMA news and events that needs to be discussed by yours truly. So let’s get right into it with some interesting topics for this week:

Al Iaquinta bashes his employers

Based on the tweets above, Al Iaquinta is a tad bit upset that his first round knockout of The Ultimate Fighter Season 1 winner Diego Sanchez was not a performance of the night winner. He took to twitter to voice his displeasures (albeit vulgar) and even went on The MMA Hour to further elaborate that the money does not seem right for him to continue fighting. This is a fine choice for Iaquinta if he decides to quit the fight game because, from I’ve heard, he is a very successful real estate. Plus it is always nice to see a fighter act like the UFC does not own them because they do not own a single person. Everyone is free to take their own paths like Iaquinta has done.

John Dodson says other fighters are ducking him

John Dodson recently defeated Eddie Wineland this past Saturday in a very impressive performance. He says that his ability to finish guys and ability to avoid getting hit while still striking his opponent is a primary reason why guys do not want to fight him. He even name dropped Raphael Assuncao and Alijamain Sterling as two of the fighters who refused to fight him on multiple occasions. If I were the other fighters in the bantamweight division then I would not blame them for wanting to avoid Dodson because he has the ability to embarass you in that octagon. It’s a surefire way to lose any momentum you have real fast. Regardless though, Dodson needs an opponent soon and I still think Jimmie Rivera should face him next (read more about that here) but only time will tell.

Phil Davis replaces King Mo against Ryan Bader at Bellator 180

King Mo has informed Bellator MMA of an undisclosed injury that will force him out of his Bellator 180 showdown with Ryan Bader. Instead, Phil Davis will defend his light heavyweight belt against Bader in the “Big Apple” at Bellator 180. This is going to be a great matchup (even though many see their first bout as a snore fest). I think another title fight is always a plus for me especially since Bellator’s rival had three title fights on their first New York card. This just got me more excited for Bellator 180 and I’m sure to spend any amount of money this PPV.

Frank Mir is unhappy with his suspension

This is just sad. Frank Mir recently stated how he does not like the UFC as much anymore because of the two year suspension he was given for his failed drug test he took back in March.

I don’t think Mir has anyone to blame but himself and at this point he should just retire because two years is a long time when you are already considered old in the division. Heavyweights don’t age well anyways. That’s one reason why none of them can hold the belt for more than two title defenses. Either way, the tests do not lie. Mir is a cheater and should just live with the consequences.

Ronda Rousey and Travis Browne get engaged

The couple of Ronda Rousey and Travis Browne are getting married. This is sure to keep Rousey out of the cage even longer. Browne on the other hand has suffered defeat in his last three fights. I don’t think anybody is going to miss them for the time being. Good luck with the marriage and have a nice honeymoon. I could use this time to bash on their careers each but that would be in poor sport. so I’ll just leave this here instead:
