They Said What?

They Said What? (April 14th – 20th, 2017)

Talking has become a staple in the mixed martial arts world with the colorful personalities that are now present. Here are some of the quotes and tweets that have been making headlines this week:

UFC President, Dana White predicts purse for Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather

It depends on how much the fight sells, and if the fight sells as well as I think it can, Floyd makes a little north of $100 (million) and Conor makes $75 (million).” – Dana White

The president of the UFC is known for his little “White lies” in the past. Everything he says should be taken with a grain of salt especially this comment concerning the (so far) fictional between McGregor and Mayweather. The split between the two has been debated and it will be no doubt that Mayweather will take the bigger cut of the two. However much that will be is a mystery so far. But when it comes to Dana White’s take on the issue just remember:

Michael Bisping says Robert Whittaker should be next challenger instead of Yoel Romero

“Yoel Romero is a dirty, lying, cheating scumbag. If you want to do Whittaker after I’ve beaten GSP, we can. If not, I’ll do Romero. But I see Robert as a more worthy contender. He stopped Jacare, Romero didn’t stop Jacare. And Robert hasn’t tested positive for steroids so really I think it should be Robert next. Let’s officially now start the campaign that after I beat GSP, it should be Robert Whittaker. Robert Whittaker vs. Michael Bisping because – okay, maybe there’s a case that he’s the most worthy contender – but more importantly, just to f**k with Yoel Romero. He is the only fight I will take after Georges St-Pierre. I just think, all those things together, Robert Whittaker – okay, admittedly, way better matchup for me stylistically – but, facts are facts and I think he should be the No. 1 contender.” – UFC Middleweight Champion, Michael Bisping

This is just a classic case of Michael Bisping being Michael Bisping (AKA a douchebag). The Count loves to pull the strings of everyone in his division and everyone knows that Yoel Romero earned the shot to face him as soon as he is done with Georges St-Pierre (assuming he wins that is). This troll attempt is good though as Yoel Romero may be baited into taking another fight to stay in his undisputed number one contender spot. Boy are things interesting in the middleweight division.

UFC Flyweight Champion, Demetrious Johnson comments on his low ratings

If you don’t like what I did Saturday night, if you don’t like a white belt who never did one jiu-jitsu tournament submitting a black belt, that’s your bag. I’m done defending myself.” – Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson

Demetrious Johnson just seems like the smartest fighter in the UFC yet he has a hard time being able to gain a massive audience like other UFC champions. People love to point out his size and stature as the main culprit to “Mighty Mouse’s” low popularity. I believe the UFC has not spent a lot of time promoting the champion. I know they made a whole The Ultimate Fighter season based around finding someone to beat him but that show has been dropping in popularity recently. I saw little commercials for his fight and putting him on a free card is a bit insulting. Having him on a PPV which usually draws a larger audience would improve his draw rate especially if you put him as a co-main every once in a while. As for the people who call themselves MMA fans, why are you not watching this guy especially when he was on FREE TV? If that is not exciting then you must just be a casual.

Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones get into heated argument over steroid use

Once you get caught cheating then it hangs a dark cloud over your career forever. Daniel Cormier claims that Jon Jones has been using steroids forever, which is not a bad claim to make. Jones denies this which is what we all expected. A lot of people point towards Cormier’s towel controversy as an indication that he’ a cheater but I honestly saw nothing. It would be hard for him to lean exactly 1.2 lbs. on the towel without even looking at the scale’s number. Jones cheating was way worse than what at best could have been accidental by Cormier. But back to the topic: Jones cheated, Cormier may have cheated, and they will fight becaue Dana White loves money. Whether it will be a main event or not is an interesting question though.

UFC commentator, Brian Stann believes that Demetrious Johnson is the GOAT

In my eyes, the best ever was Georges St-Pierre before DJ and I just thought GSP’s total dominance, his ability to take the fight and dictate where it goes, takedown defense, offense, the ability to end a fight striking and on the ground — I thought he was the best ever, but when you add up everything, [him] being so fluent lefty, righty, angles, hard to hit, beautiful offense, power — he was doing legitimate damage to Wilson Reis during this fight — mixing in punches, kicks, excellent boxing, kickboxing, wrestling ability from both sides, passing the guard consistently, having an answer for every single position, being good off his back, having excellent submissions. To me, this fight solidified the fact that he’s the best to ever do it.” – Brian Stann

Demetrious Johnson is brought up again on this article but with his recent win over Wilson Reis this past Saturday, it’s not hard to see why. Brian Stann claims that Demetrious Johnson has surpassed Georges St-Pierre as the GOAT of MMA. I love debating these GOAT claims because its a good question as to who is the Muhammad Ali of this sport. However, it is pointless as it is already hard enought to talk about who the pound for pound best fighter is because of the MANY different weight classes today. Now adding past fighters makes it completely insane. I’m going to pass on this debate for now and maybe save it for a future article but I can say for certain that being a bigger draw does not make you the GOAT. I’m looking at you Conor McGregor.

Leo Kuntz on his opponent Tae Hyun Bang being accused of fight fixing

To me, he was not fighting like somebody who was fighting to lose. From everything that I’ve gathered, what basically happened, from what I understand, is that he got scared by the UFC, when the UFC came to talk to him, and he panicked and decided not to throw that fight. And that’s why he came out to the police now, because he’s fearing for his life, his safety, so he went to the South Korean police. Even though he’s under investigation, too.” – Leo Kuntz

Former UFC Middleweight Champion, Luke Rockhold addresses the state of the UFC

The best fight the best. That’s what made this company what it is and they need to get back to it.” – Luke Rockhold

UFC Bantamweight Champion, Cody Garbrandt teases the release of a video of him knocking out former teammate TJ Dillashaw

Hey Dillashaw, let’s put an end to all of this. I’m going to go out and get as much money as I can from the video of me knocking you out. How about you pick a charity that you want to support and I’ll donate 100-percent of the proceeds to that charity.” – Cody Garbrandt to TJ Dillashaw
