What’s Going On? (Mar 11th – 17th)

A whole new week means a whole new set of MMA news and events that needs to be discussed by yours truly. So let’s get right into it with some interesting topics for this week.

Demetrious Johnson vs. TJ Dillashaw?

The superfight between the UFC’s two smallest male champions has been anticipated for months but still ha not been finalized. This largely in part has to do with Demetrious Johnson being unwilling to fight TJ Dillashaw without the proper pay. Now Johnson is stating that he has no interest in the UFC Bantamweight Championship.

I’m going to be frank and honest, if I went up there and beat T.J. Dillashaw at 135 pounds, I have no interest whatsoever in staying at 135. People are like ‘why not?’ and I’m like I have no interest in fighting guys who walk around at 160 pounds.” – Demetrious Johnson

This is reasonable thinking for the flyweight champion as he would have to deal with a lot of guys who would be considerably bigger than him. His ability to not let the pressure get to him is also admirable. Meanwhile, former middleweight champion Michael Bisping stated that Johnson needs this fight to cement his legacy. Legacy is great and all but nowadays it is all about the green stuff. Bisping should know better than that.

Amanda Nunes vs. Cris Cyborg?

While we are on the topic of superfights, Amanda Nunes vs. Cris Cyborg has been a women’s fight that many MMA fans are hopeful to see. However, Nunes appears to be backtracking her desire to face off against the dominant featherweight champion. She put emphasis on the fact that her division is starting to grow and that more contenders are lining up to face her. Nunes feels she is obligated to fight the top contenders instead of fight another champion in another division. Some feel that Nunes does not want to fight Cyborg and that she is using this as an excuse to avoid her. Whatever the case, I like the stance. Champions should be obligated to fight their top contenders. Maybe after a few solid defences then they can look for super fights.

UFC 225 News

UFC 225 is starting to shape up as Chicago has no got three big names added to the show. The main event will be Robert Whittaker defending his middleweight title in a rematch of his last fight against Yoel Romero. But if that isn’t enough then the Chicago crowd will be happy to learn that one of their own, CM Punk, will be making his return to the octagon. His opponent is still unknown. I love the main event, it will be just as exciting as their last bout, but the addition of CM Punk is surely to make the real MMA fans groan. His UFC debut was a disaster and now he is getting a second chance. Hopefully this will be his last bout because, whether he wins or loses, there is pretty much nobody left that CM Punk can even come close to hanging with.

Ronda Rousey Retired?

In a recent interview, Ronda Rousey stated that a return to the octagon is as likely as a return to the Judo Olympic scene. This is very disappointing for any fan that wanted to see Rousey strap on those gloves again, even if it was one more time. I feel this is the best call for her as she is having tremendous success with her WWE run and seems to be really happy there. Back in the UFC, she may take another beating and will also be boo’d by a bunch of anti-Rousey fans. I still think she can beat a lot of women in the UFC, but her days as champion are done.

Luke Rockhold vs. Michael Bisping III?

Trash talk has been going back and forth between Luke Rockhold and Michael Bisping on Twitter (I would post it here but there are too many to post). The fight should happen as it is the norm for a trilogy fight to happen if both fighter have one win a piece. However, Bisping doesn’t know if he fights again. He believes he may have fought for the last time but Rockhold is hoping for a final shot to redeem his embarrassing loss to The Count. Let’s all just hope and pray this fight gets made because there is bound to be a finish and this rivalry is as real as it gets.

Bisping doesn’t know if he fights again

What’s Going On? (August 6th – 12th)

A whole new week means a whole new set of MMA news and events that needs to be discussed by yours truly. So let’s get right into it with some interesting topics for this week:

Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather to pitch 8-oz gloves for fight to NAC

We discussed last week about these two wanting to fight in smaller gloves. They will finally appear before the NAC and plead their case as to why they should have 8-oz. gloves. I’m surprised by both fighters’ decision as Floyd Mayweather would be giving Conor McGregor a greater chance of beating him and McGregor has stated in his Instagram post above that he does not care which gloves he uses yet he will try to convince a panel as to why they should use smaller gloves. The size difference won’t be that significant as the original size is 10-oz. and MMA gloves are 4-oz. However, this would still make the fight even more competitive (if it ever was to begin one).

Paulie Malignaggi and Conor McGregor sparring session

nintchdbpict0003434534101.jpg

Paulie Malignaggi has continued to voice his displeasure of Team McGregor after they leaked pictures of his sparring session with Conor McGregor which made McGregor look superior in comparison to Malignaggi. Although I feel he was used negatively in this situation, I think Malignaggi needs to drop it as it is starting to make him look bad and destroying his reputation more than the pictures. In all honesty, we will never know what happened in the sparring session between these two unless footage is release which I doubt would actually happen. McGregor’s team already did something similar with another boxer and was exposed on a twitter video. If we want to see McGregor’s true skills we will have to wait till August 26th.

Cris Cyborg vs. Holly Holm at UFC 217

This is possibly the biggest female fight the UFC can do right now. Both are amazing strikers who can knockout any other competitor in their division. If the fight stays standing then it would be a fun contest to watch. However, Cyborg should be looking to take this fight to the ground to utilize her jiu-jitsu. It would be a fun contest but the fight still needs to be made. Hopefully the UFC will not take forever in making a matchup with Cyborg this time.

Georges St-Pierre signs contract for fight with Michael Bisping at UFC 217

Can we get this fight over with already? Michael Bisping’s title reign is lasting a lifetime because of his inability to fight top contenders. Hopefully whoever wins this bout will face Robert Whittaker next. Also it is nice to see another of Dana White’s lies after he stated that “the boat has sailed” for this fight to happen.

Rose Namajunas poses nude

The Women’s Health magazine ran a “Naked in 3 Words” series with UFC Strawweight Rose Namajunas posing for it. The three words she chose were Cut, The, Shit. I, for one, cannot wait for her to return to the octagon as I feel she could be a tough challenge for the current champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

What’s Going On? (July 30th – August 5th)

A whole new week means a whole new set of MMA news and events that needs to be discussed by yours truly. So let’s get right into it with some interesting topics for this week:

Tyron Woodley news

tyron-woodley-ufc-214-2.jpg

Tyron Woodley has been the topic of much discussion lately in the MMA community. Ever since he had a controversial performance against Demian Maia many people have given their criticism of the UFC Welterweight Champion. However, the fans are not the only ones that has a problem with Woodley. Dana White has shown his displeasure as well even going as far as to give the Georges St-Pierre fight to Michael Bisping instead. “The Chosen One” fired back by threatening to leak confidential information if White did not apologize. According to White, he and Woodley has made up and that Woodley did not mean the comments made towards him. I believe that Woodley was in the right in these remarks as it can become frustrating when even your own boss is being disrespectful towards you after all of the hard work you have done. Although I agree with Woodley on some of these issues, his stance against Robbie Lawler getting a title shot is a bit baffling seeing how Lawler is very deserving of a title shot after his run as a champion and his win over Donald Cerrone. With Woodley being out for about 180 days due to a medical suspension, maybe he will have time to consider Lawler as an opponent. If you want to hear more about Tyron Woodley then CLICK HERE to check out this post I made regarding “The Chosen One.”

Daniel Cormier on his loss at UFC 214

View this post on Instagram

First off, thank you all for the kind words. I have felt the support. Congratulations to Jon Jones and his team. They did a phenomenal job and got the victory. Also, to Big John McCarthy, I would like to apologize for acting up with you. I am thankful for the time you gave me to try and defend myself and stay in the fight. You are the best in the business for a reason. I also wanna thank my team and my coaches. I love you all from the bottom of my heart. Your time and energy is greatly appreciated. You guys did a wonderful job, I was ready. It's a fist fight and things happen. Dana White and the @ufc, thank you for being the premiere organization in all of MMA. Again, congrats to Team Jones and JacksonWink. Love you all. I'll see you soon. DC 📷@layziethesavage

A post shared by Daniel "DC" Cormier (@dc_mma) on

It was heartbreaking for Daniel Cormier when he lost his title at UFC 214 to Jon Jones. According to Michael Bisping, however, it must have been sweet revenge for Jones. I think that’s a fair assumption. It is delightful to see Cormier handling his loss much better now that he has had time to take it all in. Afterall, he did get a generous payday of $1 million for his efforts. Many have been wanting him to go up to heavyweight and attempt to make a title run there. I have been wanting him to challenge the heavyweight champion for a long time and this seems like the best time to try to make that happen. Even though he suffered a devastating loss, I feel it has opened up a gateway to new opportunities for him.

Jon Jones vs. Brock Lesnar

usa_today_10186476.0

This super fight is starting to gain some momentum after rumors began circulating of the two facing off against each other. Jon Jones is the odds on favorite to win, especially after his performance this past weekend, but at the same time Brock Lesnar is not someone to sleep on. The fight is not likely to happen, though, until a whole year from now according to reputable source Dave Meltzer. It appears Jones will have to settle with defending his title against a top contender instead, the most likely option being Alexander Gustafsson. Volkan Oezdemir has also been petitioning for a title shot after two first round knockout victories against both Misha Cirkunov and Jimi Manuwa with a combined time of 1 minute and 10 seconds. The UFC should book Jones vs. Gustafsson 2 with Oezdemir as a backup plan in case one of them pulls out. Retired UFC fighter, Anthony Johnson has also stated he would come back to fight Jones for the right price but I feel this would be pointless due to Johnson’s lack of interest in the fight game. With Jones being the new #1 P4P fighter and UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, he has a lot of responsibility and hopefully won’t blow it this time like he has many other times in his career. He now vows to be the champ fans deserve. One thing that would help is for him to make amends with Dana White. Jones felt abandoned when White neglected him in his time of need when in reality it was White who should be upset at Jones for ruining the UFC 200 main event they had planned. Right now is Jones’ time to really show the world that he is a changed man. Here’s to hoping he is.

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor fight over glove size

Glove size has been a widely debated issue when it comes down to the big money fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor. The bout is going to take place in a boxing ring under boxing rules with 10 oz. gloves, that is unless these two have anything to say about it. Mayweather first posted on social media that he would allow McGregor the opportunity to where 8 oz. gloves instead of the normal sized boxing gloves.

McGregor then responded by stating he normally fights in 4 oz. gloves in MMA competition. The two both seem to want this glove change to happen but the commission may have a hard time granting permission. According to the NAC, Mayweather’s team has already reached out to them about getting the glove sizes changed for McGregor. This is surprising to hear because I never would have thought Mayweather would allow McGregor to wear gloves that would give him a greater chance of knocking him out. When you’re going to make over $300 million, like Mayweather implied, I guess it does not matter if you win or not. Honestly though, I believe Mayweather wants to win this fight but does not want to hear any excuses from McGregor or his fans as to why “Mystic Mac” lost. I just want this fight to happen already so that McGregor can go back and finally defend his lightweight title against either Khabib Nurmagomedov or Tony Ferguson.

Michael Bisping vs Georges St-Pierre back on for UFC 217 in New York

nintchdbpict000306363589-e1488631343290

Th fight is back on and it will take place in New York at Madison Square Garden at UFC 217. Michael Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre is a matchup that is hated by the fans due to how unnecessary it is. But seeing how there are no challengers is available to Bisping, the fight with GSP makes sense right now. Hopefully when the fight is over the winner can go back to facing the rightful new challenger in Robert Whittaker because that is all that really matters. This is just for entertainment purposes.

They Said What?

They Said What? (May The Fourth Be With You Edition)

Welcome to a special Star Wars edition of “They Said What?” We’re going to look at the light and dark side of the force that is MMA this week. So let’s get right into it with some interesting quotes from a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away:

Anderson Silva gives the UFC an ultimatum

The guys no give this fight for me for the interim belt, I’m done. I’ll go be with my family. I’m done… I say, ‘OK, I go fight Yoel Romero,’” Silva said. “Because I know I respect Yoel Romero, he’s a great fighter. He’s No. 1 in the ranks. But one thing — why Yoel Romero come to Brazil for fight me for nothing?…This is perfect bullshit. I’m tired. I’m so tired. I’m respectful long time. Everything, I never talk about bad situations in UFC… I think I’m done. I fight for long time in my life. And I’m tired, bro. I’m so upset. I have my legacy, I have my story. It’s very frustrating, because this is the second time I’m not fighting in my country… I’m far too old and I’m done, bro. I’m sorry. I know I need to respect my fans — I respect my fans. I’m sorry guys. I love the sport. I love fighting. Fighting is my life. But it’s too much bullshit.”

Anderson Silva and Dana White once had a great relationship that has now been disrupted much like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker’s. I would really like to know what broken promises White has made to Silva other than the ones he listed. Regardless, I for one am open to an interim title match between Silva and Romero. I truly believe that, despite what he has said in the past, Michael Bisping is set on waiting for Georges St-Pierre for his next title defense so this fight makes sense. However, I would much rather like to see Bisping defend his belt against Romero next instead if GSP takes too long. It would be the best matchup in this scenario, but if Bisping wants to hug that belt to bed a while longer and wait for GSP then I want to see Silva vs. Romero in what would be a guaranteed classic just like Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader.

Tyron Woodley calls Demian Maia “stupid”

Unfortunately for Maia, he accepted the fight the week of me and Wonderboy’s fight. In my personal opinion, bad move. Wait and see how the fight went. If nobody came out of the fight hurt, a clear winner, not another draw, you’re already in a position to fight for a world title. Why would you put yourself up against the worst possible matchup outside of a title fight? Why would you put yourself in that position? I don’t want to call him stupid but damn that was stupid.”

I never knew who was the actual chosen one in the Star Wars universe, but in this galaxy Tyron Woodley is the undisputed chosen one. He believes that Demian Maia taking on Jorge Masvidal will be a decision Maia will regret because he was practically next in line for the title already. Although what “The Chosen One” is saying is true, a true warrior would not settl for waiting for a championship match to just be given to them. They go out and fight the next best fighter in their division. But I definitely see both point-of-views when it comes down to it. If Maia wins in the end then it won’t really matter (Linkin Park reference). But if he loses then Woodley will be proven right that Maia really did throw away his title shot.

Former champ Antonio Tarver on Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather

It’s a money fight. I don’t know if it’s a mockery, but it’s a money fight. That’s what it’s all about. Conor McGregor can’t beat Nate Diaz in a boxing match. In a boxing match, [Diaz] will beat his ass, and there’s a whole lot of other fighters out there who will beat his ass in a boxing match.”

Antonio Tarver is strong in the force that is boxing. He knows the true power that Floyd Mayweather posses. He also knowss that Conor McGregor has much hate and darkness within him that had a difficult time with Nate Diaz. This fight is going to go down like Mace Windu vs. Jengo Fett with Mayweather being Windu and McGregor being Fett.

Nate Diaz and Tony Ferguson go off on eachother

Nate Diaz:

They’re trying to pressure me to fight Tony Ferguson, but what the f*ck, I’m going to cover for Conor McGregor and do his work while he’s out making f*cking millions of dollars fighting boxers and sh*t? I’m not covering for you, bro. You guys fight each other. I heard Tony’s manager talking, saying that I need to get a fire up under Conor McGregor’s ass if I want to fight him for the third time. Like, I gotta do what? You guys should fight each other, motherf*cker. You guys have the same manager. You guys are working together against me. You guys need me to do the work for you? F*ck off.”

Tony Ferguson:

Well I figured, I was like,’ S**t, man. The next person that beat the dude that’s next in line would be Nate.’ So it had absolutely nothing to do with management and it had nothing to do with the f**king money either. I get paid either way and I get paid good. These dudes want to f**king make it soft and be like, ‘Oh money fight, money fight. This and that money fight.’ Yeah that’s cool. The money will come to you, you’ve just got to keep winning. You’ve gotta keep putting in the time but these b**ches want to fight like one time and then go and retire. I understand it. You’re a p**sy, don’t worry about it. You don’t like to fight. You’re in the wrong sport. Go try tennis. This is a man’s sport. I fight. I like to have job security. Give me somebody in front of me that wants to have their ass beat. Give me somebody that wants to go in there and test their wit against me. I thought this was the UFC and we’re supposed to be the best and toughest fighters in the world. Point and proven, Khabib, McGregor, and Nate Diaz are a bunch of bitches. It’s all fake for them.”

This is a case of two of the best bounty hunters (in the lightweight division) trying to compete for a chance to go after the top bounty which is the always arrogant yet skilled Han Solo (Conor McGregor). Getting said bounty will lead to riches is they are successful. Diaz is basically Boba Fett because of the fact that Fett has already captured that sweet rich bounty already where Ferguson is another hunter trying to get a taste of that action. This fight just needs to happen. I understand Diaz’s reasons for a tiny bit there but it still does not make sense when you think about it. Don’t worry about who you are helping, just worry about if you are helping yourself. This fight can definitely help whoever wins and will definitely set them up for the money fight with McGregor for the lightweight title (assuming he returns to the UFC at all).

Dominick Cruz discusses possible championship rematch

I’m here to fight the best in the world, to fight for the title, and I think that I’ve earned that position. And if I got completely to where I wasn’t even in that (Garbrandt) fight, I could understand. But I was in that fight from beginning to end, and in that fifth round, I would even say that I won. So there’s still a case for me in this match-up with Cody or T.J., either one of them.”

The Emporer (Dominick Cruz) was dethroned when the true hero from the prophecy showed himself. At first it appeared to be Anakin Skywalker (Urijah Faber), but instead it was his creation in Luke Skywalker (Cody Garbrandt). So I guess that makes TJ Dillashaw Starkiller or something. I digress, Cruz asking for a championship rematch is 100% reasonable since he was the greatest bantamweight in the UFC’s history. He was evemn considered a number one pound for pound fighter by many at one point. The winner of Garbrandt and Dillashaw will more than likely face Cruz at a later date. Cruz better hope it is Dillashaw though because Garbrandt may have his number. Much like when the light conquered he dark side in the original trilogy (until episode VII came out).

Other quotes from around the galaxy:

Joanna Jędrzejczyk on her future jedi duel with Jessica Andrade for the belt

That I can submit her and I can knock her out. But the fight is different. It was in the past. Jessica is a very dangerous opponent. She drops from 125. She’s very strong in the strawweight division.”

Stipe Miocic on how he has learned from his battle with Junior Dos Santos many parsecs ago

The lesson I learned, not even really a lesson as much as, just knowing that I belong. I belong, that I can hang anyone. I went five rounds with a former champ, a guy who has been a knockout artist and I went five rounds with him, I know I belong. I know that I’m not going anywhere, and look at where I’m at now.”

Emporer Dana White on the Diaz Brothers next fight

I don’t know if those guys will ever fight again. We offer them fights all the time.”

Rory MacDonald on his turn to the dark side that is Bellator

I’m totally feeling refreshed. It’s a new beginning. No drama. It’s been all positive on my end and with Bellator. Very happy to be where I’m at.”
