Another great night of fights have ended when the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion faced off against one of the greatest of all time in a title fight in Anaheim, California. Now it is time to see how the fights went down and how my predictions fared at UFC 214: Cormier vs. Jones 2:
Volkan Oezdemir showed off more of his impressive knockout power in the clinch when he put Jimi Manuwa to sleep within the first round of the bout. His ability to land short, precise, and powerful punches to his opponent’s head from all kinds of angles in the clinch has become a staple for Oezdemir. He now has three straight wins over some of the best this division has to offer. Is a title shot somewhere over the horizon?
Winner: Volkan Oezdemir via Knockout in Round 1
The fight was everything the fans could have hoped for. Robbie Lawler pressed forward with an endless barrage of strikes that put Donald Cerrone in all kinds of trouble. He was able to turn the table and outstrike Lawler in the later part of the fight. Alas it was not enough as Lawler was able to secure the win according to the judges.
Winner: Robbie Lawler via Majority Decision
Cyborg did what she does best and that’s hurt other people. Tonya Evinger showed toughness but was clearly outskilled and outmuscled in this one. Cyborg was able to get the job done in the third with the help of some well placed knee strikes to the head.
Winner: Cyborg via Technical Knockout in Round 3
As expected. the fans tore this match to shreds. It was not that bad in my opinion but seeing how this broke the record for the least amount of strikes thrown in a fight is probably a good reason to keep this fight low on your lists for best fights of all time. In the end, Tyron Woodley’s takedown defense (and fence grabbing maybe) won him the fight as he was able to keep the fight standing and outpoint Demian Maia to a well deserved title defense.
Winner: Tyron Woodley via Majority Decision
This was a crazy way to end a very stacked card. Daniel Cormier was looking sharper than ever against the puzzle that is Jon Jones. It was close until a question mark type kick from Jones landed on Cormier that helped dethrone the champion and crown a new yet familiar one. Jones showed that he is a change man on this night (even giving a sorrowful Cormier some love) and is looking to conquer The Beast in a future bout.
Winner: Jon Jones via Knockout in Round 3
Predictions vs. Actual Results:
Here are my predictions with some interesting stats to go along with it:
- 80% of winners picked correctly
- 60% of both winners and method of victory picked correctly
- 40% of predictions were perfect picks
